Beatrice Mintz
Beatrice Mintz (born January 24, 1921 in New York City ) is an American geneticist , embryologist and cancer researcher .
Life
Mintz acquired in 1941 at Hunter College in New York City a bachelor , in 1944 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City a master and in 1946 a Ph.D. there. Between 1946 and 1960 she was Professor of Biology at the University of Chicago before moving to the Institute for Cancer Research (later Fox Chase Cancer Center ) in Philadelphia . Since 1965 she also held a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania , also in Philadelphia.
Act
Mintz developed methods to fuse embryos from mice of different genetic origins to create chimeras . By introducing of virus - DNA into the genome , they produced the first transgenic mice. Mintz was able to show that certain tumor cells that are introduced into early mouse embryos ( blastocysts ) lose their malignant behavior. Mintz succeeded for the first time in bringing pluripotent stem cells into cell culture . She developed the first animal model for malignant melanoma .
