Anneliese Schnell

Anneliese Schnell (born December 19, 1941 in Vienna ; † July 14, 2015 ) was an Austrian astronomer.

life and work

Anneliese Schnell was the daughter of the President of the Vienna City School Council Hermann Schnell . After graduating from high school in Vienna with distinction, she studied mathematics and physics from 1959, and astronomy from 1961 at the University of Vienna . In 1967 she became a university assistant and received her doctorate in 1969. In 1972 she organized the first scientific annual conference of the Astronomical Society in Vienna after World War II and was elected from 1974 to 1980 as the first woman to be on its board. From 2007 to 2014 she was chairman of the working group of the Astronomical Society for the History of Astronomy. She has published a total of 52 writings and was co-editor of the magazine " Die Sterne " from 1993 to 2008 , which has been published since 1997 as " Stars and Space ". For the research for the "Dictionary of Minor Planet Names" she was honored in 1991 by naming the minor planet with the provisional name 1950DL as "Annschnell".

2007: Gold Medal of Honor from the University of Vienna

The main inner belt asteroid (2572) Annschnell was named after her.
