Peter Joseph Meurers (born February 13, 1909 in Cologne , † July 31, 1987 in Ettenhausen , Schleching ) was a German astronomer , astrophysicist and natural philosopher .

Live and act

Joseph Meurers attended elementary school and the Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne and passed his matriculation examination in 1928 . He studied mathematics , physics , astronomy and philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br. , Göttingen and Bonn , where he in 1934 with a thesis on the relationship of the luminosity , the mass and the temperature of stars at Arnold Kohlschütter to Dr. phil. received his doctorate . In 1938 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn with a paper on the degeneracy of matter in stars and planets.

From 1938 to 1945 he worked as a meteorologist in the Reich Office for Weather Service . After the end of the Second World War , he worked in the meteorological service of the Royal Air Force until 1947 .

In 1947 he became a lecturer at the University of Bonn, in 1948 scientific assistant at the Bonn observatory and in 1949 an adjunct professor , he also held lectures at the University of Cologne . At that time he became a member of the Astronomical Society .

In 1962, he took a call to the chair of astronomy at the University of Vienna to. He also became head of the Vienna University Observatory . There he initiated a new phase of work and introduced structures that are viewed as a “ scholarly republic ”. During his directorate in 1966 the foundation stone was laid for the Leopold Figl Observatory , which opened in 1969. From 1972 he was also honorary professor of philosophy at the University of Salzburg . From 1978 to 1979 he was head of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Vienna. In 1979 he retired .

Joseph Meurers worked in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology as well as on border problems between the natural sciences , philosophy and theology . He tried to resolve the fear of contact between scientists and humanities scholars. From 1957 to 1987 he was the editor and chief editor of the journal Philosophia naturalis . In 1964 he was President of the 80th German Catholic Convention . In 1979 he was ordained permanent deacon of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

Joseph Meurers was born in 1943 with the studied pharmacist Alice. Married young with whom he had three sons. After his retirement he moved with the family to the district of Ettenhausen von Schleching . He died on July 31, 1987 and was buried in the Schleching cemetery.
