Anni Berger

Anni Berger , actually Anna Berger , (born October 23, 1904 in Vienna , † November 1, 1990 in Bad Langensalza ) was a German rose breeder of Austrian descent.

Life

After graduating from general school in Vienna, she began studying at the commercial academy in Aussig . In 1924 she married Walter Berger. After the marriage, Anni began to work in her husband's gardening shop. The couple had three sons: Adolf (* 1925), Hans (* 1935) and Hermann (* 1939). In 1941 the family moved to Ufhoven near Langensalza, where they took over the nursery a year later after the death of their brother-in-law Lebrecht Rödiger. Until her husband returned from captivity in 1947, Anni Berger managed the nursery alone.

In the 1950s, Walter Berger began growing and propagating roses. The roses 'Bad Langensalza' and 'Zigeunerbaron' were among the first breeding successes. After Walter Berger's death, Anni Berger continued to run the nursery. The previously independent nursery was transferred to the Horticultural Production Cooperative (GPG) "Red October". Anni Berger continued her husband's work in the GPG Roter Oktober and bred over 50 new rose varieties that were launched on the market. 'Barbarina', which she presented in 1965, is considered to be her first own breed. She retired in 1978. Until shortly before her death in 1990, she continued to be interested in growing new roses. Her youngest son Hermann continued the family tradition and took over his parents' plant breeding business.

'Iga Erfurt' on a GDR postage stamp (1972)

Her Floribundarosa 'Bergers Rose Iga Erfurt ', bred in 1966, was depicted on a 10-Pfennig postage stamp of the GDR Deutsche Post in 1972 . The non-profit Anni Berger Foundation named after her has made the promotion and preservation of the rose tradition its mission. In addition, the foundation recognized in 2008 supports scientific symposia on rose breeding and care and takes care of the maintenance of public facilities and monument protection in Bad Langensalza. The foundation's funds are also to be used to erect monuments of well-known personalities and historical events in order to honor the city's history in public space and make it permanently visible.

On the occasion of her 79th birthday, Anni Berger was awarded the professional title of horticultural engineer on an honorary basis by the Erfurt School of Horticulture .

On her 100th birthday in 2004, a bust dedicated to her by Harald Stieding was presented in the rose garden of Bad Langensalza . The rose 'Anni Berger' - a cross between the roses ' Westerland' and 'Nachsommer' - was presented by Franz Wänninger in honor of the rose breeder on her 110th birthday. The remontant rose is characterized by the color of the flowers changing over the course of the year: from salmon pink in early summer, through yellow-orange and pink in midsummer, to the original color in autumn.

In 2014 a memorial plaque was unveiled in Langensalza on Marktstrasse, commemorating the successful rose grower.
