Ansgar Vonier , engl. Anscar Vonier (born November 11, 1875 in Ringschnait , Oberschwaben , † December 26, 1938 in Buckfast ) was an English Benedictine from Germany and from 1906 to 1938 the second abbot of Buckfast Abbey in Devon (England ) . He published numerous books on spirituality and liturgy .

Life

Vonier's baptismal name was Martin after the saint of his birthday. Under the influence of Bonifaz Natter , he went to Beauvais in 1887 at the age of 12 to a . a. To learn French, and in 1889 an alumni of Buckfast Abbey, which was then rebuilt on historic grounds. In 1893 he entered the novitiate , on July 2, 1894, he made his profession , and on December 17, 1898, he was ordained a priest . He then completed a philosophy degree at Sant'Anselmo in Rome , which he completed with a doctorate . In 1905 he became professor at Sant'Anselmo .

In 1906 he accompanied Bonifaz Natter, who was the first abbot of Buckfast Abbey since 1903, on a visitation trip from Subiaco to Argentina. Their ship, the Sirio , ran aground off Cartagena . Natter was among the hundreds of deaths while Vonier was rescued. Only six weeks after the accident, on September 14, 1906, Vonier was elected Abbot of Buckfast to succeed Natter; the Benediction donated to him the Bishop of Plymouth Charles Graham on October 18 of the same year.

As abbot, Vonier primarily drove the construction of the large abbey church on the foundations of the medieval Cistercian church. Particular difficulties had to be overcome during the First World War , as two thirds of the Buckfast conventuals were from Germany. The church consecration was celebrated with great solemnity on August 25, 1932, and the last scaffolding was removed three weeks before Vonier's death. He was also buried in the church. Vonier's theological writings received widespread attention. In addition to English and German, they also appeared in other languages ​​and contributed significantly to the liturgical movement .
