António Sampaio is a Portuguese journalist. He has been a correspondent for the Portuguese news agency Lusa since 1992 .

Sampaio has been dealing with East Timor since 1990 . At that time, Indonesia was occupying the former Portuguese colony . Initially based in Australia , he wrote for most of the Portuguese print media and for News Limited's Australian newspapers , such as The Australian, and reported for SBS radio and television. His extensive reporting on the East Timor conflict brought Sampaio the 1991 Correspondent Award. In 1992 he took part in the Peace Mission in Timor with the ferry Lusitânia Expresso , with which 150 activists tried to reach East Timor with media coverage.

With the representative of the East Timorese spokesman for the independence movement José Ramos-Horta , Sampaio tried from 1991 to 1992 to rebuild the East Timor News Agency (ETNA). Sampaio became the first journalist to interview Ramos-Horta in 1996 after it was announced that he would receive the Nobel Peace Prize . In 1994 and 1995, Sampaio received two Portuguese journalism prizes, the Prêmio Gazeta and the Prêmio Clube de Jornalistas, for his RTP documentary on repression in Indonesia .

In March 1999, Sampaio became the first foreign journalist to become a permanent correspondent in Dili , the capital of East Timor . He headed the Lusa office through the period of the independence referendum , the UN administration and the independence release . Between 2004 and 2015, Sampaio worked as a correspondent in Geneva and Madrid , but kept returning to East Timor to cover special events, such as the 2006 riots in East Timor . Since 2015, Sampaio has been back in Dili for Lusa as a correspondent and office manager for Lusa, the only foreign journalist based in East Timor.

On August 30, 2019, East Timor's President Francisco Guterres awarded Sampaio the medal of the Ordem de Timor-Leste .
