Antônio Ermírio de Moraes (born June 4, 1928 in São Paulo ; † August 25, 2014 there ) was a Brazilian entrepreneur and industrialist . The Brazilian racing driver Mario Moraes is his grandson.

Life

De Moraes studied metallurgy at the Colorado School of Mines in the United States, where he received his engineering degree in 1949.

He was president and member of the board of directors of Grupo Votorantim , which was founded by his grandfather, the Portuguese immigrant Antônio Pereira Inácio, and continued and expanded by his father, José Ermírio de Morais (1900–1973). Grupo Votorantim includes companies that produce cement , cellulose , paper , aluminum , zinc , nickel , steel beams , polypropylene films , specialty chemicals and orange juice . Part of the conglomerate is also a bank, about which de Moraes joked that it was founded solely to "not have to pay the interest that the financial market demands and the central bank determines". The Banco Votorantim (BV) and its subsidiary BV Financeira currently occupy third place in the ranking finance and operate in a market with banking and financial institutions, which were founded by foreign investors or for some time in the market. BV recently received the Revista Exame award as the best finance company in the country three times in a row .
According to Forbes (2014), his net worth was $ 12.7 billion.

De Moraes had multinationalized his group of companies. Among other things, it acquired an aluminum plant in Canada under his leadership. The associated Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA) was the main field of business activity of Ermírios, who personally managed the business here.

The youngest branch of the group of companies is Votorantim Ventures, founded in the late 2000s , a $ 300 million investment fund that pursues a strategy of broad investments in future technologies and potential growth industries such as biotechnology , bioinformatics , data and call centers , e-commerce and Biodiversity pursued.

He supported democratization campaigns and initiatives for the improvement of the Brazilian health system. In 1986 he was a candidate for governor of the state of São Paulo , but was not elected.

He regularly published articles in Brazilian newspapers and magazines and was a member of the Academia Paulista de Letras . He has published four books, mostly on economic and social topics. Antônio Ermírio de Moraes died of heart failure on August 25, 2014 in his native São Paulo at the age of 86 .
