description

Appearance and leaf

Anthocleista djalonensis grows as a small tree and reaches heights of up to 15 meters. Its slender trunk has a diameter of up to 40 cm. On the branches there are sometimes two upright thorns or pads on the leaf axils . Anthocleista djalonensis has soft, white wood.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The eared petiole is 1 to 9 cm long. The large, simple leaf blade is elongated-elliptical to obovate-elliptical with a length of 9 to 35 cm, for young plants up to 115 cm and a width of 5 to 17 cm, for young plants up to 50 cm a heart-shaped, rounded or wedge-shaped base, wedge-shaped top and a smooth edge.

Inflorescence and flower

In Ghana the flowering time is in April and May, in Nigeria between March and May. In a terminal, upright, dichasial, zymous inflorescence , which has a length of 15 to 50 cm, many flowers stand together. The inflorescence stem and the inflorescence axes thickened at their branches are greenish-white or light green with darker green spots.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry . The four free sepals are circular with a length of 6 to 10 mm. The 11 to 14 white to creamy white petals are fused into a 20 to 32 mm long, cylindrical corolla tube. The 11 to 14 extended corolla lobes are elongated-lanceolate with a length of 10 to 18 mm. There is only the outer circle with 11 to 14 stamens ; these protrude from the corolla tube. The stamens have grown together to form a ring. The anthers are cream-colored or light yellow. The upper continuous, four-chambered ovary is mm and a length of 6 to 7 to a diameter of 3 to 4 mm obovate. The obovate-cylindrical scar is bilobed at the upper end.

Fruit and seeds

The multi-seeded berry is 3.5 to 5 cm long and 2 to 3.5 cm in diameter ellipsoidal with a rounded upper end. The thick fruit skin is dark green. In Nigeria, fruits are found in October and November. The brown seeds are obliquely egg-shaped with a size of about 2.5 mm × 1.5 to 2 mm × about 1 mm.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Occurrence

The West African distribution area of Anthocleista djalonensis extends from Guinea-Bissau to Cameroon . Anthocleista djalonensis thrives in very dry locations in savannas or in thickets at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters.

Taxonomy

The first description of Anthocleista djalonensis was in 1908 by Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier in Mémoires de la Société Botanique de France , 2 (8), p. 47. A synonym for Anthocleista djalonensis A. Chev. is Anthocleista kerstingii Gilg ex Volkens .

use

Plant parts from Anthocleista species, for example from Anthocleista djalonensis , have been used in traditional medicine. For example, it was used for malaria , to lower fever, leprosy , poisoning, intestinal problems, sprains and diabetes mellitus . But fertility should also be positively influenced.
