features

The strawberry blossom prick is a weevil about two to four millimeters long. Its body surface is black or black-brown and has a weak metallic sheen and has thin gray hair. The antennae , which are located in the first third of the trunk, are dark red-brown in color and end in dark clubs. The legs are also dark and lightly haired. The wing covers are clearly striped and provided with large dots.

Taxonomy

In addition to a large number of generic synonyms, there are also some synonyms for the species:

  • Anthonomus gracilipes Desbrochers , 1873
  • Anthonomus leptopus Gozis , 1881
  • Anthonomus obscurus Stephens , 1831
  • Anthonomus uniformis Faust , 1890
  • Curculio ater Marsham , 1802
  • Curculio melanopterus Marsham , 1802

Way of life

The adult beetles overwinter and first collect pollen in spring . The females of the strawberry blossom piercer lay individual eggs in the flower buds of the rose family (Rosaceae). The female first bites a hole in the bud and later gnaws at the stem of the bud. After a short time, the bud will wither and fall off. The larva eats in the bud and then pupates in it. After the pupal rest, the finished beetle leaves the bud through an opening on the side. The beetle then eats petals and very soon goes into summer dormancy.

Occurrence

The strawberry blossom cutter can be found on strawberries , raspberries and, more rarely, on blackberries , roses and cloves . Sometimes it can also be found on the composites. The beetle is common in the Palearctic . It can be found in the north as far as central Fennoscandia , and it is also found in the British Isles .

pest

The strawberry blossom prick occasionally appears as a pest in strawberry crops. The only countermeasure that has proven effective is the regular collection of the dried up flower buds. Spraying tansy tea is recommended immediately after the harvest is complete .
