Anthony Boldewijn Gijsbert van Dedem, Baron van den Gelder , in France Antoine Baudouin Gisbert de Dedem de Gelder (born August 24, 1774 in Wijhe , Netherlands , † August 14, 1825 in Pievepelago , Province of Modena , Italy ) was a Dutch general in French Services.

Life

Anthony Boldewijn Gijsbert van Dedem was born in 1774 at Gelder Castle, the ancestral home of his family. Used in important offices at a young age, he went to Stockholm in 1795 as the authorized minister of his country , then to Paris . Returned in 1798, he became a soldier in 1799 on the occasion of the Second Coalition War and was captured by the British. After 1801 he was back in the diplomatic service. In 1806 he became general and was envoy to Naples and later to Kassel . After the annexation of the Netherlands, he entered French services, became Count of the Empire and Général de brigade . In the Russian campaign in 1812 he commanded a brigade under the command of Marshal Joachim Murat . In 1814, the Dutch King Wilhelm I refused his request to return to Dutch service. Dedem stayed in France and in 1816 was commander of the Jura governorate . He spent the last years of his life in Italy, where he died in 1825.
