Anthony J. DeMaria

Anthony John DeMaria (born in Italy in 1931 ) is an American physicist who deals with lasers .

DeMaria received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1956 , where he received his PhD in 1965. He then worked at Anderson Laboratories , where he worked, among other things, with acoustics . From 1960 to 1994 he worked in the United Technologies Research Center of United Technologies Corporation in East Hartford , where he was Assistant Director of Research from 1985 .

In 1994 he founded the company DeMaria ElectroOptics Systems (DEOS), which was taken over by Coherent Inc. in Santa Clara in 2001 and where he was then chief scientist. DEOS Coherent produces carbon dioxide lasers . In 2001 he was the co-founder and president of TeraBit Communications .

In addition to his industrial activities , he was Professor in Residence in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Connecticut (and from 1994 to 1998 as Research Professor at its Photonic Research Center ) and Adjunct Professor at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . He has also lectured at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Caltech and the University of Hartford .

In the early 1960s he developed Q-switching processes for lasers using acousto-optical methods. It is known for being the first to generate picosecond laser pulses around 1965. He later developed high-power lasers, among other things.

He was President of the Optical Society of America and received its Frederic Ives Medal . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Engineering (1976) and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1980 he received the IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Memorial Award . He was President of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering from 1994 to 2000 , which he co-founded, and in 2004 received the Connecticut Medal of Technology . He was an advisor to the US Department of Defense. In 2004 he was President of the SPIE (Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers). He holds over 55 patents (2009).
