Anthony Edward Kappes , MBE , (born March 1, 1973 in Stockport ) is an English cyclist who is active on track and road . It starts in the paracycling category for the visually impaired.

Athletic career

Anthony Kappes' original goal was to work for the Royal Navy . However, after graduating from university, he lost his eyesight. In order to stay fit, he began to ride tandem and eventually started cycling in the paracyling class B&VI 1–3 (today MB). Together with his pilot Barney Storey , Kappes formed the first paracycling team to win the open British championship in 2006 in tandem racing . In the same year he became double world champion in time trial and sprint at the World Cycling Center in Aigle .

From 2008 Kappes drove together with Jon Norfolk , who interrupted his own career as a cyclist, to start in paracycling competitions. At the Paracycling Track World Cup in Manchester in May 2008, Kappes and Norfolk beat the duo Simon Jackson and Barney Storey in the sprint and 1000 meter time trial , setting a new world record of 1:02:06 minutes.

At the 2008 Summer Paralympics , Kappes started again with Storey, and they won gold in the sprint and time trial, even though Kappes had broken a shoulder blade in a fall shortly before. Four years later he drove with Craig MacLean as a pilot at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London , where the two won gold in the sprint, but were disqualified in the time trial due to two false starts .

Honors

In 2009 Anthony Kappes was named a member of the Order of the British Empire .

In 1994, Kappes graduated from the University of Plymouth with a degree in Business Administration . He is also a trained masseur.
