Anthony Rowley (born July 22, 1953 in Skipton , Yorkshire ) is a linguist from Great Britain who researches the Bavarian dialects as a dialectologist and lexicographer . Since 1988 he has been editor-in-chief of the Bavarian dictionary .

Live and act

After graduating from Skipton in 1971, Rowley studied at Reading University in Great Britain. Between 1975 and 1977 he was a DAAD scholarship holder to study German at the University of Regensburg . In 1975 he received a BA from Reading University. 1981 followed the doctorate to Dr. phil. at the University of Bayreuth with a thesis on the Bavarian dialect in Fersental in Trentino . In 1987 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the morphology of the dialects of Northeast Bavaria. Rowley has been editor-in-chief of the ten-volume Bavarian Dictionary (BWB) since 1988 , which is published by the Commission for Dialect Research at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Rowley likes to comment on the fact that an Englishman became the head of the BWB with the bon mot: "Perhaps the jury thought: the main thing is, it's okay!" As head of the Commission for Dialect Research, he works closely with the Franconian dictionary .

Since 1989 Rowley has also been teaching as an adjunct professor of German studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Media appearances

Rowley can be seen on weekdays in the show Wir in Bayern produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk , for which he explains the meaning of a Bavarian word puzzled by a viewer.
