Tony Earl

Anthony Scully "Tony" Earl (born April 12, 1936 in Lansing , Michigan ) is an American politician . He was the 41st governor of the state of Wisconsin from 1983 to 1987  .

Early years

Tony Earl studied at Michigan State University until 1958 and then at the University of Chicago until 1961 . He was then a soldier in the US Navy until 1965 . Between 1965 and 1966 he served as the assistant district attorney in Marathon County and from 1965 to 1969 he was an attorney for the city of Wausau . In 1969 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Democratic Party member ; he stayed there until 1974. From 1970 he was leader of the Democrats. Between 1975 and 1980 he was a member of the state government: first as Minister for Administration ( Department of Administration ) and then as Minister for Exploration and Use of Mineral Resources ( Department of Natural Resources ). Between 1980 and 1982 he took a political break and worked as an employee of a large law firm. In 1982 he was then elected governor of his state, with 56.8 percent of the vote against Republican Terry Kohler.

Governor of wisconsin

Earl took office on January 3, 1983. At the time, Wisconsin had a budget deficit of $ 1 billion and the unemployment rate was twelve percent. A health reform planned by the governor was rejected by parliament. In matters of labor law, the governor had to deal with the unions, which were soon dissatisfied with his policies, especially with the freeze on wages and salaries, but also with other measures. As a result, Earl lost the support of the workforce. The governor was severely affected by the general economic crisis, the opposition of parliament and the workers.

After his four-year tenure ended on January 5, 1987, Earl returned to Madison as a lawyer. He specializes in environmental law and is a partner in a large law firm. He is also a member of a number of not-for-profit environmental protection organizations.
