Movies

The Diplomat (together with Manfred Flügge ) is the only documentary film in which Stéphane Hessel himself leads through the stages of his life and survival. And also answers the question why he is the child from the classic Jules and Jim by François Truffaut . The diplomat premiered in the International Forum of Young Films at the 1995 Berlinale and was the opening film of the Berliner Festwochen . It gained an unexpected topicality and re-performance in the cinema through the bestseller by Stéphane Hessel Outraged You .

Also Wurlitzer or the invention of the present (1985) had premiere at Berlin . It tells the life story of Hans Vogt , one of the inventors of optical sound film, in an "idiosyncratic way between the genres of documentary film, feature film and essay" and "captivates with the intensity of his cinematic language." ( Ulrich Gregor , Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin 1986) Wurlitzer or the invention of the present saw a revival in 2012 and Starost / Grotjahn were honored with the Hans-Vogt-Filmpreis der Stadt Rehau .

Chaupi Mundi-Die Mitte der Welt (1993) was the first cinema-length documentary for children's cinema, a genre that is rarely found in Germany. When it premiered in the competition at the Goldener Spatz Festival in 1993, it caused controversy among experts. The children's and cinema audience, on the other hand, makes it a “film classic” that is also part of the repertoire. Schäfer / Schoor speak of a "convincing conception" for Chaupi Mundi - Die Mitte der Welt, and Webersinke sums it up in their diploma thesis: "Alone in a wide field, which at least concerns the successful implementation of a semi-documentary original material for children's cinema."

The cinema documentary 7 or Why in the world am had its world premiere at the Hof International Film Festival (2011), resulted in 30 festivals, winning among others the first prize for documentary film in Biberach and in arthouse cinema like in the children's cinema long seller . The German film and media rating FBW awarded 7 or Why I am in the world with the “rating of particularly valuable” and named it film of the month. The reasoning states:

“This extraordinary documentary is exclusively dedicated to its young protagonists from Berlin, Paris, Bulgaria, Crete and Ecuador, without any reference to the adult world. The directors Antje Starost and Hans Helmut Grotjahn take the childish cosmos absolutely seriously. In this way, they succeed in relaxed and honest interviews with plenty of room for development. An entertaining patchwork of childlike wisdom, a fresh zest for life and positive energies! "

7 or Why I am in the world is also listed with educational material including at Durchblick / Bundesverband Jugend und Film and at the Stuttgart Children's Film Festival.
