Story of a love - Freya is a feature documentary by Antje Starost and Hans Helmut Grotjahn from 2016.

The film documents the life and love story of the resistance fighters Freya von Moltke and her husband Helmuth James Graf von Moltke . The focus of the film is less political action than the correspondence, which has been cultivated for years due to job-related separations. In 1944 von Moltke was arrested and taken to the prison of the Ravensbrück concentration camp . Personal contact between the couple was made possible. After the Kreisau Circle , founded in secret, was exposed, the regime sentenced von Moltke to death and transferred him to the prison in Berlin-Tegel . Thanks to a sympathetic prison pastor, the correspondence could be kept up. This ended in early 1945, shortly before Moltkes was executed in Plötzensee prison on January 23, 1945.

The filmmakers Antje Starost and Hans Helmut Grotjahn interviewed Freya von Moltke in 2001 in Vermont, their adopted home . Together with her son Helmuth Caspar von Moltke she described the experience. Excerpts from the letters that the couple wrote to each other while Helmuth James von Moltke was imprisoned were read out by the actors Nina Hoss and Ulrich Matthes .

The German festival premiere took place in October 2016 at the 50th Hof Film Festival . The film was shown at the Biberach Film Festival in November 2016 . The cinema premiere was on April 6, 2017 in the Babylon cinema in Berlin.

Reviews

The TAZ sees a less than ideal cast of the chosen actors for the voices, but evaluates the film as conclusive and captivating: "The energy of the characters, the judgment of their arguments and the highly emotional, but never sentimental, emotional state create a strong pull." The Berlin website IndieKino.de certifies the reading actors Hoss and Matthes a good performance: "They give the dialogue a poetic depth and intensity that allows us to understand the strong relationship between the two."

The Kinomagazin Spielfilm.de regards the film as a “moving, revealing portrait of two opponents of the regime with a lively authenticity.” At the same time, it warns of the long production time between the 2001 interview and the 2016 release date, due to financial problems. Kino-Zeit.de notices the tension in the film that has arisen from the premonition of approaching death and the clarity of one's own situation. The writing style used in the documents is described as "extraordinary poetry". Due to the successful setting, no conversion into a moving image is required and the empty rooms and landscapes shown enable the attention to be focused on the letters read.
