Antolín Monescillo y Viso (born September 2, 1811 in Coral de Calatrava , † August 11, 1897 in Toledo ) was a Spanish bishop and cardinal .

Life

On July 22, 1861 he was appointed Bishop of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño and on October 6, 1861 by Cardinal Cirilo de Alameda y Brea OFM Obs. consecrated bishop with the assistance of Francisco Landeira y Sevilla and Clemente de Jesus Mungiuia y Nunez . His motto was Monstra te esse Matrem ( Ave maris stella , verse 4). On March 27, 1865, he was appointed Bishop of Jaén . On June 22, 1877 he was appointed Archbishop of Valencia and enthroned on October 5, 1878.

Pope Leo XIII. elevated him to cardinal in the consistory on November 10, 1884 and on June 10, 1886 the titular church of Sant'Agostino was assigned to him.

On June 11, 1892, he was named Archbishop of Toledo and Patriarch of the West Indies .

He died on August 11, 1897 at the age of 85.
