Anton Eitel (copper engraver)

Anton August Eitel (born June 22, 1841 in Düsseldorf ; † December 23, 1928 there ) was a German engraver .

Life

Eitel was admitted to the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1857 , initially studying with Josef Wintergerst (elementary class), Karl Müller (2nd class Antikensaal), Andreas Müller (art history) and from 1860 to 1871 in Joseph von Keller's engraving class . During this time, as a devout Catholic , he joined the circle of the Düsseldorf Nazarenes , made devotional pictures for the Association for the Dissemination of Religious Images , and became a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1868 he received a scholarship for the purpose of completing his work. In 1870/1871 he took part in the Franco-German War as an officer of the 4th Guards Grenadier Regiment "Queen Augusta" .

Eitel was married to Maria, daughter of the landowner Carl Kürten. At the end of the 19th century he lived at Wielandstraße 18 in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort . This was also the address and seat of the Association for the Dissemination of Religious Images , which Eitel was responsible for. Eitel was a member of the Düsseldorf History Association . His son Anton Eitel (1882–1966) became a historian .

As a reproduction engraver ( copper and steel engraver ), Anton Eitel created numerous plates based on biblical history, images of the Madonna and saints. His works include the sheets "The Immaculate Conception" by Albrecht Steiner von Felsburg and "Mater amabilis" by Franz Ittenbach .
