Anton Fendrich (born April 8, 1868 in Offenburg , † January 6, 1949 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German writer and politician .

Live and act

Fendrich was born in 1886 as the son of a railway official. Through his friendship with Oskar Geck, who later became a member of the Reichstag, and his family, he found close ties to social democracy at an early age . After completing a degree in economics in Zurich , he worked as an editor for various SPD newspapers. From 1895 he worked in Offenburg and later in Karlsruhe for Volksfreund , the newspaper of the SPD state organization founded by Adolf Geck . In 1898 he was elected as the youngest member of the second chamber of the Baden state parliament, of which he was a member until 1902.

After that he turned away from politics. Philosophy, art and nature played a bigger role in his life and work. He wrote several hiking and nature guides and earned his living as a correspondent for various features . During the First World War, he returned to political journalism and campaigned vehemently for the integration of social democracy into the “ national community ” and for perseverance in the war, which earned him the applause (and several interviews) of leading military and politicians.

During the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich, he worked as a private teacher in Freiburg, and wrote his memoir novel Hundred Years of Tears in addition to natural and local literature . In 1946 he received the Johann Peter Hebel Prize .
