Anton Forch (born December 15, 1785 in Siefersheim , Rheinhessen , † October 11, 1857 in Speyer ) was a Catholic priest , pastor at Speyer Cathedral , as well as cathedral capitular and cathedral provost of the Speyer diocese .

Live and act

He came from Siefersheim and was probably the son of the Catholic school teacher, Glöckner and later Maires Friedrich Forch, who had been there since 1762 , and his wife, née Metzroth. Anton Forch attended the Mainz seminary led by Bruno Franz Leopold Liebermann under Bishop Joseph Ludwig Colmar . In Mainz he was ordained a priest on April 17, 1813. From All Saints' Day 1813 to January 1, 1815, the clergyman served as city chaplain in Speyer, and from 1815 to 1821 as pastor in Göcklingen . At that time, both places belonged to the French Grand Diocese of Mainz , which was congruent with the political Département du Mont-Tonnerre .

With the conclusion of the Bavarian Concordat of 1817 , the lost diocese of Speyer could be re-established in 1818. The actual rebuilding took place until 1821. In that year the circumscription bull was published and a cathedral chapter was installed on November 7th. The enthronement of the first bishop, Matthäus Georg von Chandelle († 1826), took place on January 22, 1822. Forch's parish Göcklingen fell from the diocese of Mainz to the diocese of Speyer, and in 1821 he himself was accepted into the new cathedral chapter . On May 21, 1822, Bishop Chandelle appointed him a clergyman .

Until his election as cathedral priest on November 14th, 1822, Anton Forch worked as secretary of the cathedral chapter in addition to his canon office. Franz Xaver Remling writes: “He had a strange memory, a lot of knowledge, good principles and an eager will for all that is good. When the cathedral chapter Günther resigned, he was elected pastor by the cathedral chapter on November 14, 1822 and happily and impartially took over the pastoral care of the district capital, which was just as difficult as it was responsibility ... his grave. “On November 28, 1854 Pope Pius IX. Anton Forch as Provost of Speyer, which office he held until his death. Peter Köstler succeeded him as cathedral priest in 1855 .

Forch, who was also an episcopal penitentiary , died in October 1857 and was buried in the old cemetery in Speyer . The grave no longer exists, when the former canon crypt was dissolved, the bones were reburied in the newly created cathedral chapter cemetery at St. Bernhard's Church. Here a stele commemorates the earliest canons of the new diocese. Anton Forch is also recorded on it with his life data.
