Anton Haupt (the elder)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anton (Friedrich Johann) Haupt (the elder), also: Friedrich Johann Anton H., Johann Anton Friedrich H. , (born September 18, 1800 in Wismar ; † November 22, 1835 ibid) was a lawyer and mayor of Wismar.

Life

Anton Haupt was born the son of a lawyer. He comes from a family that has lived in the city of Wismar for several generations. Several clergymen and councilors emerged from this family, who consequently belonged to the urban upper class. Anton's father, Dr. jur. Gabriel (Christian Anton) Haupt (1763-1818) became Wismar Senator in 1808 and in 1814 Syndic of the city.

Little information is available from Anton's childhood. In his self- confession, written in 1820, Haupt writes: My childhood was quiet and friendly, I enjoyed the love of my parents and was welcomed by those who knew me.

According to his teacher and later friend, Magister Crain, the principal of what was then the Great City School , Haupt was one of his most talented students. In 1817 he passed his school leaving examination and in the same year began studying law at the University of Jena . Here he spontaneously joined the original fraternity in 1817, and soon became its leading representative.

He enthusiastically participated in the fraternity's Wartburg festival on October 18, 1817. He represented the interests of young students with conviction. In 1819 he moved to the University of Bonn . Here he became a member of the general fraternity in 1819 . For this reason, among other things, he was arrested and placed under house arrest. After an apparent declaration of loyalty in which he explained his political work, withheld nothing, but also did not denounce any of his fellow students, he was able to return to Wismar in the summer of 1820.

After passing his legal examination, Haupt received the license to run a law firm in Wismar. He quickly gained a reputation, not least because of his professional ability, and so he was elected council member in 1823 and mayor of Wismar on August 20, 1826.

Services

Haupt is considered one of the most important Wismar mayors. While he was in office, Haupt implemented many reforms that particularly affected the medieval administrative apparatus. At his instigation, the first city hospital was opened at the Black Monastery in 1833 , and the cemetery on the former Gallows Hill was inaugurated as early as 1832. In order to break down prejudices on the part of the citizens, Haupt designated the place where the gallows originally stood as a grave for himself and his family.

In particular, however, his reforms began to improve the poor. In his capacity as the sovereign commissioner for the investigation of the poor in Mecklenburg, he wrote: "May the state create a class of proletarians for itself who must become bad because they are treated badly ..."

Far-sighted thoughts, which were also expressed in the fact that shortly before his death, Haupt demanded that Wismar be incorporated into the railway network, which was only just emerging.

family

Anton Haupt's grandfather, Christian Haupt , was superintendent of the Marienkirche in Wismar . His wife was a daughter of the lawyer and Wismar mayor Ernst Hertzberg (d. J.). His father, Gabriel Haupt , was a town counsel and senator. His younger brother, Eduard Haupt , was a theologian and a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly . Haupt's son of the same name, Anton Haupt (the younger) , was also mayor of Wismar.

The family grave of Mayor Haupt is preserved as a memorial in Wismar today. He himself has received a worthy place in their history.
