Prince Anton (I) Esterházy de Galantha (born April 11, 1738 in Vienna ; † January 22, 1794 ibid) was the sixth majorate of the Esterházy family .

Anton was the son of Nikolaus I. Joseph Esterházy de Galantha and Marie Elisabeth Ungnad Countess von Weissenwolf . On January 10, 1763, he married Countess Maria Theresia Erdődy von Monyorókerék and Monoszló. She was the daughter of Count Nikolaus Erdődy von Monyorókerék and Monoszló and Maria Antonia, nee. Countess Batthyány- Strattmann. Maria Theresa died on May 1, 1782 in Vienna. On August 9, 1785, Anton married the seventeen-year-old Countess Maria Anna von Hohenfeld, daughter of Count Otto Franz von Hohenfeld and Maria Anna, nee. Freiin vom Stain zu Jettingen .

Like his father Nicholas I, Anton (I) had embarked on a military career. In 1791 he became a captain in the Hungarian bodyguard and knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece . In 1792 he fought one last time for his emperor in the first coalition war against France .

When Anton succeeded his father as majorate in 1790, he was confronted with a mountain of debt of 3.8 million guilders . On the one hand, he initiated an austerity course that also resulted in the closure of the court orchestra under the musical direction of Joseph Haydn . On the other hand, he arranged for the main facade of Esterházy Palace to be supplemented with a balcony supported by a colonnade and for court stables to be built.

Anton was awarded the Grand Cross of the ku St. Stephen's Order .

His son Nicholas II succeeded him as head of the Forchtenstein line.
