Antoni Reiter

Antoni Franciszek Reiter (born March 16, 1950 in Danzig ; † February 9, 1986 ibid) was a Polish judoka who was third in the world championship in 1973 and European champion in 1975.

Athletic career

The 1.81 m tall Antoni Reiter fought in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 80 kilograms , until 1976 . He won his first Polish championship title in 1971. at the 1971 World Championships in Ludwigshafen, he retired early after losing to the Dutchman Jan Snijders . In early 1973 he took third place at the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in 1973 he was defeated by Bernd Look from the GDR in the round of 16 . At the 1973 World Championships in Lausanne, he lost to the Japanese Isamu Sonoda in the pool finals and to the other Japanese Shozo Fujii in the semifinals . In the battle for a bronze medal, he defeated Guram Gogolauri from the Soviet Union. At the end of 1973 Reiter won his second Polish championship title.

In 1974 he finished second in three tournaments. At the European Championships in London he was defeated in the finals by the French Jean-Paul Coche . Three weeks after the European Championships, he lost to Adam Adamczyk at the Polish Championships . In November 1974 he lost to the Japanese Yoshimi Hara in the final of the World Student Championships . In 1975 Reiter won the final of the European Championships in Lyon against Abdulgadschi Barkalajew from the Soviet Union. This year he was able to fight for his third Polish championship title. At the World Championships in Vienna in 1975 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Alexej Wolosow from the Soviet Union. In May 1976, the European Championships 1976 took place in Kiev . Reiter won a bronze medal, but was only second-best Pole in his weight class behind Adam Adamczyk, who came in second. Therefore, Reiter avoided the light heavyweight division for a starting place at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. There he won his first fight against Paul Büchel from Liechtenstein with Ippon after 4:44 minutes. In the last sixteen he was eliminated from Dietmar Lorenz from the GDR to Waza-Ari.
