Live and act

Ciacca, who grew up in Italy, took piano lessons at the age of seven and was educated in the USA, began his career in jazz as a sideman for Art Farmer , James Moody , Lee Konitz , Mark Murphy , Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman . In particular, Grossman's influence - with which Ciacca studied for three years - was an important inspiration for Ciacca's own style. In 1993 Ciacca moved to Detroit to study with Kenny Barron at Wayne State University ; then he had private lessons with Jaki Byard in New York. His first exposure to gospel music was living in Detroit , an influence that he soon incorporated into his own style as a composer and performer. Eventually, Ciacca produced an album for the Detroit Gospel Singers . Ciacca holds a Masters degree in African American Musicology from the University of Bologna. In the 1990s he also played in Europe and the USA with Craig Bailey , Benny Golson , Larry Smith, Joe Henderson and in 1998 in Japan with the Eiji Nakayama .

In 1997 saxophonist Steve Lacy brought him into his band, a collaboration that would last seven years. In the same year, Ciacca met Wynton Marsalis , who later became his colleague at Jazz at Lincoln Center , while Marsalis performed with Elvin Jones in Italy. In 2007 he moved to the American cultural administration and took on the role of program director for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Until 2011 he worked with the artistic director Wynton Marsalis. In 2009, Ciacca also taught at the Juilliard School's Business of Jazz music school . In 2011 he became Artist in Residence at the Setai Hotel (later Langham Place Hotel) on 5th Avenue and 36th Street in New York City. In 2013 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall , where he performed with his trio (Paul Gill on bass and Peter Van Nostrand on drums) and the New York Pops. Ciacca is currently Artist in Residence at the Pierre Hotel in New York and Composer in Residence at Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle, NY. In the field of jazz, he was involved in nine recording sessions between 1995 and 2015, according to Tom Lord . Currently (2019) Ciacca leads a quartet that includes JD Allen , Clovis Nicolas and Peter Van Nostrand.
