Ulysses Owens

Ulysses Samuel Owens Jr (born December 6, 1982 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American jazz musician ( drums ) and university teacher .

Owens, the son of a choir director and sound engineer, first learned classical piano at the age of eight and had percussion lessons during his school days. At the age of 17 he was given the opportunity to study in the jazz program of New York's Juilliard School . He also worked in the New York jazz scene from the mid-2000s; first recordings were made in 2006 with vocalist Diane Hoffman ( My Little French Dance ). In the following years he played a. a. with Antonio Ciacca , Kurt Elling , Vincent Gardner , in the Christian McBride Big Band ( The Good Feeling , 2011), with Bria Skonberg , Ted Nash, Michael Dease , Diane Schuur , Joey Alexander , Marcus Printup , Theo Croker and Gregory Porter ( Nat King Cole and Me , 2017).

Owens recorded his debut album It's Time for U under his own name around 2010 , on which Sullivan Fortner and Ben Williams also participated. In the field of jazz he was involved in 40 recording sessions between 2006 and 2018. Owens is Professor of Jazz Studies at New York's Juilliard School ; He previously taught at Jacksonville University and the Caine College of Art ( Utah State University ) jazz program . Owens lives in Washington Heights .
