Antonio José Ramírez Salaverría (born October 31, 1917 in Cariaco , † June 28, 2014 in Maturín ) was Bishop of Maturín .

Life

Antonio José Ramírez Salaverría attended the Minor Seminary in Cumana and studied philosophy and theology at the Interdiocesan Seminary in Caracas. He was ordained a priest on July 14, 1940 and worked in the Archdiocese of Cumaná , most recently as vicar general .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on May 24, 1958 as the first bishop of the newly founded diocese of Maturín . The apostolic nuncio in Venezuela Raffaele Forni consecrated him on September 14, 1958 as bishop; Co- consecrators were Juan José Bernal Ortiz , Archbishop of Ciudad Bolívar and Crisanto Darío Mata Cova , Bishop of Cumaná . On May 7, 1994, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Antonio José Ramírez Salaverría was the councilor of all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and secretary of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference.

He built the Cathedral of Our Lady on Mount Carmel (Catedral Nuestra Señora del Carmen) in Maturín. It took 21 years to build; At the inauguration on May 23, 1981, the then President of Venezuela Luís Herrera Campíns was present.
