Antonio Maria Viani , called Vianino (* approx. 1555 - 1560 in Cremona , † 1629 in Mantua ) was an Italian painter and architect of the late Mannerism in the transition to the early Baroque . In Munich he was also known under the name Viviani .

Life

In Cremona he was a student of Giulio Campi . A signed and dated early work by Viani is his Madonna and Child (also: Santa Maria di Portici ) from 1582 for the Church of San Domenico in Cremona.

From 1586 to 1592 he worked in Munich at the Wilhelm V court under Friedrich Sustris and Peter Candid (Peter de Witte) in the Antiquarium and in the grotto hall of the Residenz . Viani was also Sustris' son-in-law, he married his daughter Livia. For the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in Munich, he painted the altarpieces Sacrifice of the Old Covenant (or Holy Trinity ), Sacrifice of the New Covenant (or veneration of the name of Jesus ) and possibly also the very different handover of keys to Peter (1587; only attributed).

In 1592 Vincenzo I Gonzaga called him to Mantua and later appointed him “Prefect of the state building sites” (“ prefetto delle fabbriche di stato ”). As a scenographer, Viani also created sets for plays and operas.

Various paintings by Viani are in the Palazzo Ducale of Mantua and in the Church of Sant'Andrea . His main pictorial works include the dome fresco of the Last Judgment in the church of San Pietro del Po in Cremona and, very likely, the vault frescoes in the apse of the cathedral in Mantua , which were long considered the work of Domenico Fetti .

Viani also worked for Maurizio di Savoia , who in 1622 commissioned an altarpiece of the Archangel Michael for the abbey church of the Sacra di San Michele in the Susa Valley .

Antonio Maria Viani worked as an architect for decades at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua and built, according to plans by Leon Battista Alberti , the transept , choir and crypt of the Church of Sant'Andrea (1597–1600). Other major architectural works by Viani are the church and convent of Sant'Orsola in Mantua (1608), as well as the Villa Ducale in Maderno on Lake Garda (1603).

At the end of the 20th century, an extensive inventory of Viani's drawings was discovered in the Clary-Aldringen collection in Bohemia .
