Antonio Tamburini (born March 28, 1800 in Faenza , † November 8, 1876 in Nice ) was an Italian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Born in Faenza , he studied the horn and singing with Aldobrando Rossi and Bonifazio Asioli with his father, a conductor . At the age of 18 he made his debut in the opera La contessa di colle erbose by Pietro Generali . In the further course he became one of the best and most sought-after baritons of his time. His vocal range is said to have ranged from high G to low C. He sang in Piacenza , Naples , Livorno and Turin until he came to La Scala in 1822 . Further engagements followed in Vienna, London and Paris (1832–1851). In 1855 he stepped down and limited himself to concert appearances until 1869. His beautiful, soft and flexible voice corresponded to the bel canto ideal of his time. His dazzling appearance and an impressive stage presence were praised. He often performed with the tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini and the soprano Giulia Grisi . Tamburini is famous for its connection with the operatic works of Bellini and Donizetti . He was part of the famous Puritani quartet with Giovanni Battista Rubini , Giulia Grisi and Luigi Lablache . At the premiere of Donizetti's Don Pasquale , this quartet appeared again on stage, with Rubini being replaced by Giovanni Mario . From 1822 he was married to the contralto Marietta Gioja-Tamburini, with whom he often appeared on stage.
