Cape Verde Islands

Antonio da Noli (* 1415 in Noli (Liguria) ; † 1497 on Santiago (Cape Verde) or according to other information * 1419 ; † 1491 ) was an Italian navigator of the 15th century who discovered part of the Cape Verde Islands in the service of Portugal .

biography

Antonio da Noli came from a patrician family of the then independent Ligurian Maritime Republic of Noli and sailed in the service of the Genoese before he emigrated to Portugal with his brother Bartolomeo and his nephew Raffaello in 1449 and placed himself in the service of the Infante Henry the Navigator . It is disputed whether he is the same sailor who discovered two of the eastern Cape Verde Islands ( Boa Vista and Santiago) in 1455 and 1456 under the name Antoniotto Usodimare together with Alvise Cadamosto on their way to a repeated expedition along the Gambia River. . The majority of the sources assume that it is a different explorer from Genoa.

What is certain, however, is that between 1458 and 1460 - probably due to the news of Cadamosto - he set out for Santiago with his brother and nephew and founded the settlement Ribeira Grande (today Cidade Velha ) at the southern end of the island in 1462 . Like Diogo Afonso, the systematic development of the entire Cape Verde archipelago is ascribed to him. Due to divergent travel reports, however, it is no longer possible to clearly reconstruct which of the individual islands were discovered by him or Afonso and which, on the other hand, go back to exploratory trips by Diogo Dias and Diogo Gomes .

Antonio da Noli is considered to be the namesake of the islands, to which he gave the official name Ilhas de Cabo Verde ("Islands of the Green Cape"). The Portuguese King Alfonso V appointed him governor ( Capitão-donatário ) of Ribeira Grande in 1462 , the first permanently inhabited European colony in the tropics . This office was transferred to his only daughter Branca de Aguiar on April 8, 1497, after De Noli's death, on the condition that she married Jorge Correia, a descendant of the Portuguese royal family.

In memory of him, the Italian Navy baptized a destroyer with the name Antonio Da Noli during World War II . This sank off the coast of Corsica on September 9, 1943, one day after the public announcement of Italy's surrender .
