The Antonius Chapel is in the southeast of the municipality of Schwyz . The listed chapel is dedicated to Anthony of Padua and was built between 1687 and 1688. It belonged to the Immenfeld manor.

history

The construction of the chapel goes back to a pledge by Johann Dominik Betschart (* 1656; † 1736). Since his wife Elisabeth Kyd was awakened from the apparent death and was able to receive the final sacraments afterwards, he vowed to build a chapel in 1681. After six years, construction of the chapel began at the courtyard portal of the manor in Immenfeld, which he owned. The year 1688, which is located in the coat of arms cartouche above the chapel entrance, dates the completion of the building to this year. The chapel was built in honor of St. Anthony of Padua. The consecration took place in 1693 by the pastor Conrad Heinrich Ab Yberg. The consecration was carried out in 1701 by Conrad Ferdinand (auxiliary bishop of Konstanz). The chapel was extensively renovated between 1908 and 1912, and the exterior was restored in 1960. The last restoration took place in 1992, when the image of St. Anthony on the outer wall was exposed again.

Building

It is a simple, high stilted building with an early baroque character, in the execution as it was used in the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows on Schmiedgasse. The chapel consists of a short, rectangular nave with a drawn-in choir enclosed on three sides . On the west side is a vestibule supported by two Tuscan columns with a simple wooden barrel ceiling . The chapel roof is a bent, continuous gable roof , on which there is a round roof turret with a hexagonal hood .

The painting Sermon of St. Anthony is located above the rectangular sandstone portal . This picture was set back on the occasion of the last renovation and the 1960 painting by W. Müller has been removed. Today's picture actually consists of two different parts. Saint Anthony was painted by Johann J. (Jakob?) Bertle (1837–1911) on the occasion of the renovation in 1908–1912, but the background is still the previous picture from the 17th century.

inner space

The interior is spanned by a barrel vault, which is supported on the projecting cornice . The cornice is only interrupted on the entrance side. The choir is designed as a wall pillar. The interior is richly decorated with stucco. Although the plasterer is not known, stylistically they must be assigned to the circle of the Ticino plasterers Giovanni Bettini and Giacomo Neuroni, who were active in the area at the end of the 16th century. In the head of the choir is the richly decorated coat of arms of the Betschart's, which is located in a scroll wreath, which is held up by two putti . Above the figural niches on both sides of the altarpiece there is a putto, each containing a heraldic cartouche with the coats of arms of the Reding and Kyd. In the ship there are both ceiling and side wall pictures, which are framed by stucco. The pictures in the interior are from the late 17th century.

The altar lacks a clear architectural structure, so the altar, predella and altar attachment are loosely placed one above the other. There is a painted antependium , this shows a scene from the founding legend, the discovery of the chalice. The altarpiece, which takes on the function of the altarpiece, is located in a lavishly decorated frame with leafy tendrils and putti, in the apex of which there is a medallion with a carved group of the Coronation of Mary. The picture itself shows Saint Anthony with the Madonna and the Child Jesus, in the composition and painting style it corresponds to the painting of Murillo , it is however assumed that it was created by an Italian master.

In the two niches are the statues of St. Dominic and St. Francis de Sales . The choir is separated by a richly decorated choir grille that is slightly advanced into the nave.

Protection status

The chapel was inventoried in 1982 and given the regional classification worthy of protection (possible classifications: local, regional, national).
