Anton Mahnič or Antun Mahnić (born July 14, 1850 in Kobdilj ; † December 14, 1920 in Zagreb ) was bishop of the diocese of Krk ( Italian Veglia ) from 1896 until his death . He was a great promoter of Slovenian and Croatian culture and was heavily involved in the Yugoslav national movement of the time.

Life

After his ordination on August 30, 1874, he was prefect and head of the boys' seminary in Gorizia from 1875 to 1891 , where he founded the Slovenian-language church newspaper Rimski katolik in 1889 . In addition, he obtained a theological doctorate at the University of Vienna in 1881 . Until his appointment as Bishop of Krk, he was first supplent and later professor of biblical studies of the New Testament at the Gorizia seminary .

On December 3, 1896, he was called to be Bishop of Krk. The Archbishop of Gorizia and Gradisca , Alois Zorn , donated him the episcopal ordination on February 7th of the following year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Ljubljana , Jakob Missia , and the Bishop of Poreč and Pula , Giovanni Battista Flapp .

As Bishop of Krk he supported the use and dissemination of the old Glagolitic script and was committed to the preservation of the Old Slavic rite in his diocese . In 1901 he had a diocesan synod held in his diocese . In 1902 he founded the Old Slavic Academy on Krk for research on Slavic and church history .

Because of his political commitment to the national cause of the Yugoslavs, the shepherd of a bilingual (Croatian-Italian) diocese was deported to Italy during the Italian occupation of the island in 1919 and had to answer to the spiritual authorities of the Holy See in Rome. From there he returned seriously ill in 1920 and died a short time later in Agram, today's Zagreb.
