At 1221 meters, the Aonach Mòr is the eighth highest mountain in Scotland and one of the highest peaks in Great Britain. Although it is 13 m lower than the neighboring Aonach Beag ( Little Mountain or Little Ridge ), viewed from the Great Glen between Spean Bridge and Fort William, the Aonach Mòr looks more massive than the Aonach Beag towering behind it. Both peaks represent the highest points of a mountain ridge that initially runs from north to south, which is connected in the southern part, about halfway between the two peaks, by a narrow Bealach with the neighboring Càrn Mòr Dearg and the subsequent Ben Nevis. They are classified as Munros . While the ridge runs very wide and flat to the north into the Great Glen, it drops off steeply to the west and especially east. In the Coire on Lochain on the east side of the mountain, snowfields often last all year round.

The highest British ski area Nevis Range has been located on the wide northern slopes of the Aonach Mòr since 1989 . The ski area is accessed by the only British gondola lift and various ski lifts . In summer, in addition to hikers, paragliders and mountain bikers in particular use the gondola lift, whose mountain station is 655 meters above sea level. On the downhill -Departure the Nevis Range of competitions already found several times Mountain Bike World Cup the UCI instead. In 2007 it was also the venue for the Mountain Bike World Championships .

The summit of the Aonach Mòr can be hiked comparatively easily from the mountain station. In Munro excavators that way but frowned upon, the busiest route, avoiding the gondola runs through the Glen Nevis and a rise on the south side of Aonachs.
