description

Blossom from the side
Radially symmetrical flower from above

The Apennine sun rose is very variable in terms of the size of all parts of the plant, the growth and the hairiness ( indument ).

Appearance and leaf

The Apennine sun rose grows as a subshrub and reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The branches are usually upright or ascending and are tomentose and hairy. The leaves are 8 to 30 millimeters long and 1 to 6 millimeters wide and linear-lanceolate to eilanceolate. The leaf margin is more or less rolled back. The underside of the leaf is tomentose due to dense, star-shaped tufts of hair and the upper side is more or less gray-tomentose due to loose hairs ( trichome ). The stipules are linear-lanceolate, pointed and about 0.25 times as long as the leaves.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

The flowering period extends from May to July. Three to ten flowers stand together in terminal, simple, loose coils .

The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The inner sepals are ovate with a length of 5 to 10 millimeters with a blunt upper end and densely short felted. The outer sepals are linear-lanceolate, obtuse and about 0.3 times as long as the inner ones. The free, white petals are 8 to 15 millimeters long and lemon yellow at the base. The stylus is quite long, bent to a knee at the base, filiform and thickened towards the tip.

The capsule fruit is hairy and triangular-egg-spherical.

Chromosome set

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence and endangerment

Helianthemum apenninum occurs from southern England via France, Germany to the northern Mediterranean region and Asia Minor. It is a western Mediterranean-Atlantic floral element . The Apennine sun rose is very rare in Central Europe.

In Austria, the Apennine sun rose is completely absent. In Switzerland it is very rare to find it in southern Ticino . The Apennine sun rose is very rare in Germany; it is only found in southern Saxony-Anhalt, northern Thuringia, Lower Franconia and Rheinhessen.

The Apennine sun rose grows on dry limestone grass. It can take root up to 90 centimeters deep. It thrives best on warm, stony, clay soils or rocks. In Central Europe it is a type of character of the Xerobromion association, but also occurs in companies of the Mesobromion association.

Endangerment in Germany: Category 3 = endangered. The species is particularly protected according to the BartSchV !
