Apollo has been a submarine cable system in the Atlantic since 2003 for the exchange of data between Europe and North America. The company is owned and operated by Apollo Submarine Cable System Ltd. based in London , a subsidiary of the telecommunications group Vodafone . The connection is mainly used for data transfers for the Internet .

Apollo was originally a joint venture between the network operator Cable & Wireless (60%) and the technical equipment supplier Alcatel (40%). After Vodafone took over Cable & Wireless, Apollo is now wholly owned by Vodafone.

The DWDM multiplex system consists of two fiber optic routes (north and south), each around 6,500 kilometers in length. The total capacity with four fiber pairs per route was originally designed for a data throughput of 3.2 terabits per second. Thanks to further optimized multiplex processes, 8 terabits per second can now be transmitted over a fiber pair.

In February 2006, Level 3 Communications announced that it had secured a transmission capacity of 300 Gbit / s with the option of a further 300 Gbit / s via Apollo.
