The Aprilia RST 1000 Futura is a fully faired motorcycle from the Italian two-wheeler manufacturer Aprilia , which was manufactured in Noale from 2001 to 2003 .

construction

The sports tourer is powered by a liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine from Rotax , which generates a nominal output of 83 kW (113 hp). The V-engine has a cylinder angle of 60 degrees, is started by an electric starter and has electronic manifold injection . The four-stroke engine is largely identical to that of the Aprilia SL 1000 Falco . The Futura has a dry weight of 210 kg. The Futura is built on a bridge frame made of an aluminum alloy, the rear wheel is guided by a single-sided swing arm . A chain works in the secondary drive between the 6-speed gearbox and the rear axle .

A double ignition initiated by capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) with two spark plugs per cylinder is intended to improve the combustion of the fuel-air mixture and reduce exhaust gases. The dry sump lubrication does not have an oil pan and stores the lubricant in a separate container. Two balancer shafts (Anti Vibration Double Countershaft, AVDC) are designed to reduce engine vibrations. A hydraulically assisted anti-hopping clutch (Pneumatic Power Clutch, PPC) prevents the rear wheel from jarring when decelerating heavily.

The large, angular design of the full fairing polarized: While some found the design to be innovative and the design language resembles a Lockheed F-117 , others simply found it to be too angular. With its hard-shell suitcases, the Futura was supposed to compete with the similarly designed sports tourer Honda VFR 800 FI (RC46), but insufficient sales and Aprilia's deteriorating liquidity led to the Futura being discontinued just three years after its debut. Production ended in 2003, and sales continued until 2005.

design

Pierluigi Marconi was the responsible chief developer of the project. He designed the Futura around the engine and chassis of the Aprilia RSV Mille . Significant changes compared to the Mille were the single-sided swing arm and the exhaust system mounted under the seat, which reduced the width of the vehicle and created space for the side cases.

Marconi also specified a 30% more powerful alternator with a capacity of 470 watts to supply the electrically operated touring rider accessories ( navigation system , heated grips and clothing, hands-free system).

The exhaust system was designed in such a way that, despite its location, it does not heat up the seat. With an unregulated 2-way vehicle catalytic converter in exhaust aftertreatment, it met the limit values of the Euro-1 emissions standard .

Marconi quit Aprilia and first switched to the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Benelli and then to the Spanish manufacturer GasGas . Due to his departure, previously announced improvements such as an anti-lock braking system and on-board voltage sockets were not implemented.

terminology

Futura is a Latin adjective and means future .

Reviews

“The consistently futuristically styled RST 1000 Futura has an avant-garde effect thanks to the ultra-modern plastic shell, the computerized cockpit and the innovative exhaust system under the hump. [...] Despite two balance shafts, the Vau was not considered to run particularly smoothly, more centrifugal mass should ensure new gentleness. In the lower speed range, the Futura actually runs more cultivated than its sisters Mille and SL 1000 Falco, but it still doesn't feel particularly comfortable under 3000 tours. "

“The bottom line is that the Aprilia RST 1000 Futura is a pretty competitive sports touring bike that does a great job of handling the combination of idiosyncratic form and problem-free function, which is not always unproblematic for Italians. Sitting position and load change behavior are not for everyone. It is certainly not the disguise. "
