Aprobarbital is a medicinal substance , more precisely a barbiturate . Chemically speaking, it is a derivative of barbituric acid . It was first synthesized by Ernst Preiswerk in the 1920s. It has sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects and has been used primarily to treat sleep disorders. It has now been replaced by other barbiturates, and preparations based on apbarbital are no longer permitted in Germany.
