history

The village of Taquixmón , inhabited by Huasteken Indians (Teenek) , was in the private property of the Aztec ruler Montezuma II and after the conquest of Tenochtitlán by the Spaniards (1521) passed into the possession of Hernán Cortés , who, however, gave it to his colleague in 1525 Gonzalo de Ocampo handed over. In the wake of the Conquistadors came missionaries of the Franciscan Order , who first Christianized the surrounding area and later also areas in northern Mexico .

Attractions

  • The main church of the village is the single-nave parish church of San Miguel Arcángel , which started after a fire in the previous church in 1725 , whose unplastered bell tower (campanario) is divided into several floors and ends in a lantern . Opposite it is a triple openwork bell gable (espandaña) , which was probably only used during the construction period. The nave and the altar area are spanned by iron girders.

  • About 15 km southwest of Aquismón is the more than 500 m deep " Swallow Cave " (Sótano de las Golondrinas) , which is largely closed to visitors.
