Arafel ( Hebrew ערפל'Nebel') is a folk black metal band. It was founded in 1997 by musicians from the former Soviet Union living in Israel . The band calls their style "Epic War Metal".
history
Arafel was founded in Tel-Aviv in 1997 by the students Arthur Krupp, "Candlelight", Felius, Mihail, Leon "Oboroten" Notik, Grom "Lord Asmodeus" and Aleksey "Leshii" Sajko, who came from the former Soviet Union . The musicians met at a Russian school in Tel-Aviv. The band began to play classic black metal with influences from Slavic folklore, and in April 1999 released the demo Skazki Starogo Lesa (German about 'stories of the old forest') on the Latvian label Beverina, limited to 500 copies .
After a few appearances and first line-up changes, the band recorded the debut album The Way of Defender in Selani Studio in Poland and released it in 2003. It is a concept album and is about the Russian "national hero" Alexander Nevsky . The album was very popular with fans and in the trade press, so that Arafel was signed to the Russian label Sound Age in the same year.
The second studio album The Second Strike: Through the Flame of the Ages was recorded in October 2004 in Studio X in Olsztyn , Poland and released in 2005. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the German label Twilight Vertrieb took over the promotion and distribution of the album.
At the beginning of 2009, Helge Stang , the then singer of the German band Equilibrium , joined Arafel. In October 2010 the band signed a contract with the Austrian label NoiseArt Records . Around this time, the band's third studio album was recorded in the Polish Hertz studio and released on January 28, 2011 under the name For Battles Once Fought . In March 2011 Arafel accompanied the bands Korpiklaani , Unleashed , Moonsorrow , Kivimetsän Druidi and Varg on the Paganfest tour 2011, where they also presented their new album. This was the band's first European tour. In April 2011, they performed at the Ragnarök Festival , one of the most important festivals in the pagan metal scene.
style
Initially, Arafel played classic black metal with slight influences from Slavic folklore. In the meantime, clear Death Metal influences and a strong influence of Folk Metal can also be found in the compositions .
The lyrics are mainly in English , although there are also some Russian pieces; With Im Feld there is also a German lyrics written by Helge Stang.
