Helge Stang (* 1983 in Berlin ) is a German singer, songwriter and film and video editor from Munich . He was best known with the pagan metal band Equilibrium , where he was a singer until 2010. Since 2008 he has been active with the Israeli folk metal band Arafel .

Life

Helge Stang (full name: Helge Lennart Stang) was born in 1983 in the West Berlin district of Steglitz . In early childhood he moved with his family to a suburb of Munich, where he also grew up. Before he discovered singing, he started playing bass with friends in his youth in various smaller local bands.

In January 2001 he founded the band Equilibrium with René Berthiaume , Sandra Völkl and their brother Andreas Völkl . Originally only designed as a cover band for one gig, the 17-20 year olds enjoyed making music together and decided to form a "real" band out of Equilibrium. In summer 2002 he completed his school career with the Abitur.

In 2004 he joined the Munich death metal band Reign of Decay . After around four years of activity, he left the band in late summer 2008.

Stang joined the Israeli folk metal band Arafel in spring 2009 as a singer . In November 2008, Nasha, the violinist of the band, contacted him about this. Compared to the webzine powermetal.de , Stang said about joining the band as follows:

“[...] We met in 2005 at the 'Parmesan' [sic!] (Which means Party.San ) and we also stayed in contact by email. So here and there - nothing big. And then at some point I received an email asking if I would like to sing their new record. I thought: sure, why not? [...] It all sounded very interesting, that's why I accepted. "

After around ten years with Equilibrium, Helge Stang was kicked out of the rest of the band in early 2010. After rumors had spread on the Internet immediately afterwards, the news was officially confirmed by the band on February 13th of that year. The reason given was the human and musical divergence between Stang and the other musicians, and the resulting lack of harmony within the band. The drummer Manuel Di Camillo and the merchandise seller left the band with Stang, as Di Camillo in particular could not imagine Equilibrium as a singer without Helge Stang.

In the summer of 2010, Stang founded the black / death metal band Driven with Manuel Di Camillo and their mutual friend Sebastian Klusmann . In addition to the vocals, he also takes on the bass there.
Also in 2010 he sang two songs on the debut album of the same name by the melodic black / death metal band Craving , which was released in early 2012 via Apostasy Records .
He can be heard on the songs Ein spark Abendrot and Lug and Litanei , for which he also wrote the lyrics. Since 2014, Stang has also been the singer and bassist of the “Wolves Den” project, in which ex-Equilibrium member Manuel DiCamillo is also involved.

Private

Stang is a passionate rower . In his youth, he won the Bavarian rowing championships several times, took fourth place in youth training for the Olympics and once achieved fifth place in the German championship, so that he was part of the extended national team.

Stang is also a trained film and video editor . The training for this took place between 2005 and 2007 at the Münchner TV Werk . He then worked for the Munich company Twentyfiveseven , mainly creating commercials and digital film effects. After two years at Twentyfifeseven, he gave up his job in mid-May 2009 and made a living from music and as a freelance editor. From 2010 to 2012 he worked at Südlich-t and has been freelance again since spring 2012.

style

Helge Stang mainly uses the singing technique of screaming . He also occasionally uses growling as an accentuation and stylistic device .

It was shaped by various black metal bands such as Dimmu Borgir , Cryptic Wintermoon , Graveworm etc. and their genre-typical high screaming. While he tried to imitate their singing at the beginning, he developed his own style over time and names bands like Taake or Novembre as influences .
