Arapuni is a rural community in the Waikato region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .
geography
Arapuni is located 15 km southwest of Tirau on the Waikato River . Hamilton is 45 km northwest of the village. The population of the municipality fell slightly between 1996 with 2211, 2001 with 2163 and 2006 with 2145 inhabitants, but recovered slightly in 2013 with 2190 inhabitants.
Arapuni Power Station
To the west of the town center is the Arapuni Power Station , a hydroelectric power station whose dam dams Lake Arapuni . Below the dam, a suspension bridge, the Arapuni Suspension Bridge , spans the river. The dam at Arapuni was put into operation in 1929. The power plant consists of eight turbines with a total output of 196 MW, making it the most powerful of the power plants on the Waikato River . The power plant is operated by Mercury NZ Limited .
