Araucaria laubenfelsii is a species of the genus Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It is endemic to the southern part of the New Caledonia island of Grande Terre .
description
Araucaria laubenfelsii grows as a columnar, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 10 to 50 meters. The gray bark flakes off in irregularly shaped scales or in thin strips. The twisted branches stand tightly and are 1.8 to 2.8 centimeters thick.
The leaves of young specimens are scale-like and have a curved tip. They reach a length of 10 to 15 millimeters. On older specimens, the roof-tile-like, scale-like leaves are 12 to 20 millimeters long and 8 to 10 millimeters wide and triangular with a pointed or curved upper end and a pronounced central rib.
The male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of 12 to 15 centimeters and a diameter of 2.2 to 2.8 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with twelve pollen sacs. The spherical female cones have a length of 10 to 12 centimeters and a diameter of 8 to 9 centimeters. The seed grows to around 3 centimeters and has rounded wings. The seedlings form four cotyledons ( cotyledons off).
Occurrence
The natural range of Araucaria laubenfelsii is in the south of the island of Grande Terre, which belongs to New Caledonia . It occurs there on the Mont Dzumac , the Mont Dou , the Mont Kaala , the Mont Mou , the Mont des Sources and in the area around Canala .
Araucaria laubenfelsii thrives at altitudes between 400 and 1400 meters. It inhabits mountain slopes and peaks. The species grows on soils that develop on ultramafic rocks . They are found mainly in thickets and in the higher rainforests. At some locations, mixed stands of Araucaria biramulata and Araucaria montana are formed.
Systematics
Araucaria laubenfelsii belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria laubenfelsii in 1968 by Michel Corbasson in Addisonia; colored illustrations and popular… 8, p. 467.
Hazard and protection
Araucaria laubenfelsii is listed as "low risk" on the IUCN Red List . Mine construction and the associated activities such as road construction and clearance storage are named as the main risk factor on Mount Kaala and in the vicinity of Canala. In the stands further south, forest fires pose a particular danger. The majority of the southern stands are in protected areas.
