The Ardelt is a diesel locomotive that was built between 1936 and 1954 by the Ardelt works in Eberswalde and Wilhelmshaven in 54 copies. It was intended for use in shunting services; their wheel arrangement is B. The locomotives were primarily procured by industrial companies for their works railways.

Locomotives from Eberswalde

The Ardelt-Werke GmbH , founded in 1902 by Robert Ardelt in Eberswalde , Province of Brandenburg , built a total of 38 locomotives with combustion engines between 1936 and 1939 , which were mainly characterized by the Ardelt overhaul gearbox. This patented transmission enabled safe shifting from one gear to the other without interrupting the tractive effort. It was used, among other things, in diesel locomotives, railcars, trucks and the standard locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

For the construction of these locomotives, several engines of the type F6M317 (80 HP) and A6M220 (150 HP) were obtained from Deutz-KHD . MAN supplied other engines , type W6V175 / 22 with 180 hp. The following machine types are known: NB 70, NB 85, NB 120, NB 150 and NB 180. In addition to various industrial companies and the Niederbarnimer Railway , recipients were also the Army High Command . Ardelt locomotives moved into the Heereszeugamt Breslau , the Naval-Sperrzeugamt Swinoujscie and the Kriegsmarinewerft Kiel . The Niederbarnimer railway were from other companies with the Niederbarnimer Railway T 3 and the Niederbarnimer Railway T 4 two railcars delivered with the gearbox were equipped the Ardelt-Werke. The T 3 was destroyed in World War II, the T 4 was in operation until 1966.

Only three of the shunting locomotives have been preserved in a museum: the locomotive with the factory number 13 (Denkmal, Kirow Ardelt AG, Eberswalde), the locomotive with the factory number 26 (monument, works railway of Hans Hatschek AG , Gmunden ) and the locomotive with the factory number 28 ( Bavarian Railway Museum (BEM), Nördlingen ).

The Ardelt 13 was delivered to Eisen und Metall AG in Gelsenkirchen in 1938 . Since March 1980 it has stood on a playground in Gelsenkirchen-Erle before it was exhibited in the Westphalian Industrial Museum (WIM) in 1991 . In September 1993 she was transported from the museum to a playground in Leverkusen- Schlebusch. In December 2005, Kranbau Eberswalde (Kirow Ardelt AG since 2008) took over the locomotive and erected it on the factory premises as a memorial. This returned the diesel locomotive to its place of manufacture.

The Ardelt 26 was delivered to the Hans Hatschek AG works railway in Gmunden in 1939 and erected there as a memorial in 2002. In 1939, the recipient of the Ardelt 28 was Donauwerke AG for the lime industry, Saal an der Donau . Between 1961 and 1964, the Süddeutsche Kalkstickstoff-Werke AG (SKW), plant in Saal an der Donau, was rebuilt. The shunting locomotive has been in the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen since 1988.

After the Second World War, the plant was expropriated and nationalized. The production of locomotives was not resumed. As VEB Kranbau Eberswalde, the company concentrated on the manufacture of harbor cranes. Since 2008, the company "Ardelt" has had its original name again. Ardelt is the world market leader for double-link cranes and produces, among other things, balancing cranes, container cranes, slewing cranes, portal cranes and loading bridges.

Locomotives from Wilhelmshaven

After 1945 the Ardelt family had to give up the plant in Eberswalde. The family fled to Lower Saxony and founded factories there in Osnabrück (head office) and Wilhelmshaven (main workshops). Here the company built a total of 16 locomotives for the Danish State Railways (DSB) between 1951 and 1954 with the series DSB tractor 101–116 . In 1951/52 six locomotives were ordered for trial operation and in 1953 ten slightly modified series vehicles were ordered and completed in the main workshops in Wilhelmshaven. The cars had MAN diesel engines W5V 17.5 / 22A with five cylinders and an output of 123 kW (167 hp) at 1000 min -1 . DSB 115 was temporarily with a more powerful engine by Maschinenfabrik Frichs in Aarhus equipped Frichs 6185CA, 6 cylinder 184 kW (250 hp) at 1000 min -1 .

The locomotives had a half-height, narrow engine front end with a driver's cab at the end, the two-axle running gear was driven by jackshaft and rods. A special feature was the pneumatically shifted five-speed gearbox with multi -disc clutch patented by Ardelt : This gearbox enabled frictional shifting, which means that the engine power is continuously transmitted even during the shifting process.

The Ardelt locomotives were stationed on Zealand and Funen and were painted green throughout their service life. In addition to their shunting activities, they temporarily carried light freight trains on branch lines. By 1989, all locomotives built by Ardelt had been taken out of service by DSB. Of the Ardelt locomotives, only the DSB 115 (MAN no. 203748) has been preserved in a museum. It was delivered to DSB in 1954 and decommissioned in 1989. It has been with Östejaellandske Jernbaneklubb (OSJK) in Køge , Sjælland region, since 1990 .

In addition to locomotives, the Ardelt works in Lower Saxony also manufactured heavy and extremely heavy crane systems. A large part of the production was exported. On August 15, 1953, Ardelt relocated its head office, previously located in Osnabrück, to the main workshops in Wilhelmshaven. The works came to Friedrich Krupp AG in 1953 and now traded under the name Krupp-Ardelt GmbH . The company changed its name to Krupp-Kranbau when, in 1964, after the death of Rudolf Ardelt, the family's shares in Krupp were also transferred.
