Ardnave is a small town on the Scottish island of Islay and is therefore in the Council Area Argyll and Bute or the traditional Scottish county of Argyllshire . The village is located in the northwest of the island on the Ardnave peninsula on the west coast of the Loch Gruinart inlet , about 14 kilometers northwest of Bowmore , the capital of the island, and 16 kilometers northeast of Port Charlotte . Ardnave can be reached via side roads of the A847 , which connects Portnahaven via Port Charlotte with the A846 in Bridgend .
Today Ardnave only consists of a few inhabited houses, mainly the listed farm Ardnave House with the associated stables . In 1841 there were 77 people there, while in 1851 there were only 60 inhabitants. Ardnave is not explicitly listed in the current census.
Surroundings
In 1976, the remains of an early settlement were discovered in the dunes east of Ardnave. A former stone dwelling measuring almost six meters in diameter was described. Furthermore, pottery shards and a bone needle were found, which were not examined further. A few hundred meters south of Ardnave in the southwest of Ardnave Loch is a small, almost circular island that is connected to the land when the water level is low. Signs of early settlement were also found on this. Maybe the island is a crannóg .
