Arild Midthun (born May 6, 1964 in Bergen , Norway) is a Norwegian comic artist , illustrator and caricaturist . Midthun also worked as a comic artist in part under the pseudonym Arnold Milten . He has been active as a comic artist since 1980 and has since been known in the Norwegian comic book industry with an unmistakable line in an impressively diverse range. Midthun's drawing style is clearly inspired by the humor series of traditional Franco-Belgian comics . In February 2014, a selection of the Disney comics he had created for the Danish Egmont group was published in German-speaking countries.

Life

In 1980 Midthun visited the Semic Nordisk Forlag in Oslo at the Norway Cup to introduce himself with his drawings. The then editor of Semic, Terje Nordberg , recognized a great talent in the then 16-year-old Midthun and gave him a few manuscripts to draw for a series.

Thereupon his first drawn works were published in the comic series series-focus and in its successor Sirkus after a script by Tormod Løkling . In addition, Midthun designed a series of one-page comics together with Løkling Character for the Norwegian magazine KOnK .

After his participation in the comic Sirkus , he was signed by Terje Nordberg and Eirik Ildahl and henceforth worked on the comic series Phantom in Norway. In 1983 he drew his first contribution to the annual Christmas albums in Norway, the Norwegian comic Truls og Trine based on a text by Nordberg and Dag Kolstad . This series was awarded the Norwegian comic prize Kultur- og kirkedepartementets pris for barne- og ungdomslitteratur of the Kulturdepartementet . Kolstad was the sole writer for the Sirkus series and became Midthun's partner. He and Dag Kolstad regularly created comics for the Norwegian edition of MAD . From 1985 Arild Midthun worked with Kolstad, Nordberg and Petter Engbo on Gevion forlag, which was restarted by Semic . Since Easter 1986 he worked permanently on their comic series Pyton under the pseudonym " Arnold Milten ". Other employees in the Pyton comic series also used aliases, including the authors Tormod Løkling as " Termos Løkring ", Dag Kolstad as " Dick Kolby " and Rolf Håndstad Rhesus Minus and Balle Brock to disguise their real names, as the series is quite crude was viewed. Together with Løkling, Midthun designed the comic figure Bottolf Nerd , who was considered the workhorse of the comic magazine. In addition, Midthun created the character and main character of Norge Rundt in his Pyton time based on a script by John-Kåre Raak . When Kolstad gave up his post as editor and author at Pyton in 1995, Midthun worked with his successor Waldemar Hepstein .

In 1988 he published his first album for the series Troll , drawn in the Franco-Belgian style based on a storyboard by Terje Nordberg. In the same year, the album was awarded the Sproingprisen (Sproing Prize), the following volume in 1990 with the Kulturdepartementets tegneseriepris . However, the series was discontinued due to falling sales.

In 1996 he released the album "Ivar Aasen - ei historie om kjærleik" ( Ivar Aasen - a story of love ), based on a story by children's book author Erna Osland . In the same year, the comic series " Pappa og Pestus " (written by Nordberg and Ildahl) began in the magazine Ernie . In these two series, Midthun's drawing style was consolidated compared to his previous work. The Ivar Aasen series was realistically designed and drawn in great detail and was based in part on photographs or other images. In “ Pappa og Pestus ” Midthun's drawing style was again very simplified compared to his earlier work.

In 2001, Mithun drew his own comic as a comic artist based on a text by Dag Kolstad for the Norwegian Olsen Gang Junior film series , which was continued in 2004 as a comic series similar to that of the Senior Olsen Gang in Norway . Furthermore, in 2006 he was also involved as a cartoonist in the comic book Kaptein Sabletanns verden (Captain Saber Tooth World) about the fictional pirate Captain Saber Tooth .

Midthun is currently working as a Disney draftsman for the Norwegian edition of Donald Duck & Co (roughly equivalent to German Mickey Mouse ), which is one of the most widely read comic magazines in Norway. He has designed several covers for the comic magazine Donald Duck & Co since 2004 and on June 9, 2005, on Donald Duck's 71st birthday, his first long Disney comic was printed.

In 2014, the Disney comics he had drawn for Egmont were collected in a German version and published with an interview with the illustrator under the title The best stories from Arild Midthun .

Arild Midthun also worked as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist for various book publishers and newspapers , including the Aftenposten . Since 2011, Midthun and the writer Gunnar Staalesen have been writing a short comic book crime thriller every year, which is printed on more than 22 million milk cartons at the Tine dairy and is very popular in Norway.
