The Ark Futura is a Ro-Ro ship operated by the Danish shipping company DFDS Seaways . Home port is Esbjerg in Denmark. In 2014 the ship u. a. Used by the Syrian Army for the transport of chemicals intended for destruction for the production of chemical warfare agents to a US American special ship off the coast of Syria.

history

The ship was built in Italy in 1995/1996 as the Dana Futura . The launch took place on October 13, 1995. On June 4, 1995, the ship was delivered to DFDS and initially used in the North Sea between Esbjerg and Harwich, then from 1997 between Esbjerg and Immingham.

At the end of 2000 the ship came to the DFDS Tor Line and was renamed Tor Futura . The ship has been chartered out several times. a. also used in Australia and the Mediterranean.

The ship has been part of the ARK project initiated by Denmark since 2005 and is available to the Danish and German armed forces and NATO partners for troop and material transports if required.

In April 2011 the ship was renamed Ark Futura .

Transport of chemicals 2014

According to a resolution passed by the UN Security Council in September 2013, the Syrian army's chemical weapons are to be completely destroyed by mid-2014. The then US President Barack Obama had previously threatened a military attack against the country because of the alleged use of poisonous gas near the Syrian capital Damascus if the then President Bashar al-Assad did not destroy the chemical warfare agents. The United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague, arranged the transports and chartered the Ark Futura , which between January and June 2014 carried out several transports of “urgency chemical materials” from the Syrian port city of Latakia to the Cape Ray performed. The chemicals came from two different chemical weapons locations of the Syrian armed forces, according to the OPCW. The Ark Futura was accompanied by ships from the People's Republic of China , Denmark, Norway and Russia .

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by a main engine from MAN B&W (MAN B&W 58/64) with an output of 11,120  kW , which acts on a controllable pitch propeller . The ship is equipped with two bow and one stern thruster for turning and berthing maneuvers . Diesel generators and a shaft generator are available for the power supply on board .

Cargo can be stowed on three decks ( tank ceiling , main deck and weather deck ). The main deck can be reached via a stern ramp and another ramp in the stern area on the starboard side . The main deck is 6.10 meters high. Ramps run from the main deck to the tank ceiling and the weather deck. The deck on the tank ceiling has a height of 5.80 meters (in the area of ​​the ramp, however, only a height of 4.60 meters is available), the weather deck also has a height of 6.10 meters. There are 2,943 m² or 882  lane meters on the main deck, 3,186 m² or 1,006 lane meters on the weather deck and 1,351 m² or 420 lane meters on the tank ceiling, for a total of 7,480 m² or 2,308 lane meters. A total of 644 TEU can be stowed on board  . There is space for 288 on the main deck, 110 on the tank top and 246 on the weather deck. A total of 76 connections are available for refrigerated containers or other temperature-controlled cargo (40 on the main deck, 20 on the weather deck and 16 on the tank ceiling). Of these, however, a maximum of 60 can be used at the same time.

There is a crane on the starboard side that can lift up to 36 tons.
