Previous model 16-Six

The Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon is a passenger car that the British manufacturer Armstrong Siddeley produced from 1946 to 1949 based on the Lancaster , which was released a year earlier, and as the successor to the 16-Six . The name continues the tradition of the company car models of aircraft models of Hawker Siddeley from the Second World War to name.

As with the Lancaster, the chassis had independent wheel suspension with torsion bar springs at the front and a driven rigid axle at the rear, which was suspended from longitudinal leaf springs. The model had a partially hydraulic braking system from Girling . The front wheel brakes were operated hydraulically, while rope and rod brakes were used on the rear axle. The vehicles were equipped with disk wheels as standard.

Initially, an overhead six - cylinder engine with 1991 cm³ displacement (bore × stroke = 65 mm × 100 mm) was installed, which with a compression of 7: 1 an output of 70 bhp (51 kW) at 4200 rpm. delivered. This engine came from the predecessor 16-Six. From 1949 it was replaced by an engine with the same characteristics, but 2309 cm³ displacement (bore × stroke = 70 mm × 100 mm), a compression of 6.5: 1 and an output of 75 bhp (55 kW) at 4200 rpm. In addition to a manual four-speed gearbox, a preselector gearbox was also available on request .

The two-door coupé body with four seats was constructed using a composite construction method. Sheets of aluminum were attached to a frame made of ash wood and aluminum. The cars had rear-hung doors, also known as suicide doors .

When the Typhoon was first launched, it cost £ 1214 on the home market. By 1953, 1701 Typhoon were made.

Armstrong Siddeley Tempest

The Armstrong Siddeley Tempest was a rare, four-door variant of the Typhoon and also a prototype of the Whitley .

Six copies were made in 1949, but five of them were later bought back and scrapped by Armstrong Siddeley. The only remaining copy (registration number: JHP 113) was bought by the late private citizen Les Clark in Ilkeston . It has a 2.3 liter engine and a four-speed gearbox. The front doors of the four-door are hinged at the back (suicide doors). The car is painted dark blue / gray (originally it was a solid black) and was in regular use until the early 1990s. Its current location is unknown, but it is believed to be somewhere in the UK.
