The Armstrong Siddeley Whitley is a passenger car that the British manufacturer Armstrong Siddeley produced from 1949 to 1954 based on the Lancaster released in 1946 and as the successor to the 16-Six .
As with the Lancaster, the chassis had independent wheel suspension with torsion bar springs at the front and a driven rigid axle at the rear, which was suspended from longitudinal leaf springs. The model had a partially hydraulic braking system from Girling . The front wheel brakes were operated hydraulically, while rope and rod brakes were used on the rear axle. The vehicles were equipped with disk wheels as standard.
The Whitley was powered by an overhead six - cylinder engine with 2309 cm³ displacement (bore × stroke = 70 mm × 100 mm), which with a compression of 6.5: 1 had an output of 75 bhp (55 kW) at 4200 / min. delivered. This engine basically came from the predecessor 16-Six, but was drilled out by 5 mm. In addition to a manual four-speed gearbox, a preselector gearbox was also available on request .
There were different structures. The most common were four-door sedans with four or six side windows. From 1950 to 1952, however, some Pullman limousines were also built on the extended chassis. The "Utility Coupe" and "Station Coupe" versions were pickups that were built for export - primarily to Australia . The former was an ordinary Ute with a bench in the front, the latter a double cabin with a small, additional seat in the back.
By 1954, 4,321 copies of the Whitley had been made. Successor from 1955 was the Sapphire 236 .
