Halcombe is a settlement in the Manawatu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The settlement was named after Arthur Halcombe , an immigration officer and member of the Wellington Provincial Council .

geography

The settlement is located around 11 km northwest of Feilding and around 10 km northeast of Bulls in a slightly hilly area east of the Rangitikei River . The climate in Halcombe is typical for Manawatu , with not too strong winds and sufficient sunshine and rain. There is frost in winter, and due to the inland location there is usually one or two periods of severe frost each year.

history

The settlement of Halcombe was organized by Arthur Halcombe from nearby Feilding . The nearby site of Stanway was named after his wife, the artist Edith Stanway Halcombe (daughter of William Swainson ).

Halcombe was originally supposed to be the center of the Manawatu region. For this reason, there are still numerous areas designated for road construction in the surrounding area.

population

In the 2013 census, the settlement had 534 inhabitants, 23.6% more than in the 2006 census.

Infrastructure

traffic

The place was once an important railway junction. But since the riverbed of the Rangitikei River prevented further development, further development shifted to Palmerston North . The North Island Main Trunk Railway runs through Halcombe , but the station has been closed.

Education

The place has a primary school with 147 students in 2014.

Attractions

In the village center there is a war memorial for the two world wars and a former taxidermist's shop, which is now in ruins. The hotel and the former post office and the “ Rangitawa ” residential building are listed buildings.
