Arne Schmitt (born March 21, 1972 in Hagen ) is a German pianist who appears as a street musician . Schmitt has a secondary school diploma and is self-taught . He plays without notes and improvises on the basis of well-known pop songs . He had his first public appearances in childhood and adolescence between 1984 and 1997 as an accordion player and trumpeter . Since 1997 he has been traveling with a piano through Europe - initially part-time - and has already played in more than 300 cities. At the age of 29 he gave up his job in a car repair shop and from then on played full-time on the streets.

Over the years the artist changed his musical instrument and also the mode of transport. First he played a piano , later he switched to a baby grand piano and then to a 385 kilogram, medium-sized grand piano (brand August Förster ). The musical instrument, which was prepared for performances even in sub-zero temperatures, originally stood on a pedestal that could be rolled by hand. The artist now drives his grand piano on a flat trailer (which then serves as a pedestal) with a quad into the city centers. For longer distances the team is loaded into a transport vehicle.

A performance ban in Frankfurt am Main led to a public legal dispute before the Hessian Administrative Court in Kassel . Similar bans have also been raised in the press in other cities.
