Arno Seifert (born July 27, 1936 , † January 3, 1987 ) was a German historian in the fields of university history , the history of science and the history of culture .

Life

Born in Silesia , he moved to Thuringia in 1945 before starting to study history and Romance studies in Halle (Saale) in 1953 . He soon developed critical political activities which earned him observation by the Ministry of State Security . He was arrested on December 13, 1957 while preparing for his exam. In the subsequent process he was sentenced to a prison sentence of seven years, which he served mainly in Bautzen .

After he was released to the Federal Republic on August 20, 1964, he resumed his studies at the University of Munich , where he graduated with honors with the academic examination for teaching at secondary schools. In 1969 he received his doctorate summa cum laude with a thesis on the University of Ingolstadt . With a thesis on the secular state and the form of the church, he qualified as a professor in 1978 for middle and modern history and was appointed adjunct professor in Munich in 1982. Already marked by an insidious disease, he had a long job there in the university archives.

Services

Based on the rich material on the history of Ingolstadt University, in his first creative period he traced the lines of development of the European university during the times of upheaval late scholasticism , humanism , Reformation and Counter-Reformation . The posthumously published article in the Handbuch der deutschen Bildungsgeschichte draws the sum of this knowledge of school and university history.

After completing his habilitation, he devoted himself to the history of science and ideas from the Middle Ages and early modern times. His preoccupation with the conceptual history of “Historia” resulted in his committed participation in the scientific theoretical discussion of his subject.
